Pin Her Down
Dominance. Control. Authority.
These are all words that describe this photo. A women is literally pinned down by a man, with three other men standing around watching. They demonstrate the power that they possess over her and their unwillingness to back down. Lets not kid ourselves, most men are much stronger than women.. it's not a shocker! The part of it that is shocking is when men use their dominance in a scary way. They are powerful enough to hurt women and this photo is a shocking revelation that sometimes that is the reality of life. Women are literally beaten to death everyday, sexually abused, and physically harmed. Yet, Dolce and Gabanna is trying to make this "dominance theory" look good! They are using this idea of gender dominance to sell their product! This company is destroying the image of women by ranking them lower than men! One of the guys is pinning her down giving her absolutely no control, while the man to the right fiercely watches over his fellow male companion making sure the girl doesn't escape. I can only compare it to the kid getting beat up in middle school and having everyone around watch and do nothing to stop it. How does that happen? Furthermore, Dolce and Gabanna sells clothing for kids too. Their advertising is sending false ideas to women, but to children as well. The images that the media companies send out can say so much about gender rank, we just have to look and be careful what we take in!

I've seen this ad before, and it still blows me away. It makes no sense - what are they even trying to sell? If I had no idea what Dolce & Gabanna was, I would assume it was some sort of porno company or sex toy or something along those lines.
ReplyDeleteThere is literally nothing about this ad that sells clothing - all it sells is sex. Weird, group sex, at that. I simply can't understand what made this ad acceptable!
The imagery makes your body react towards the people involved - they're all attractive and we can pretty safely assume they're not just posing that sexually for fun. The ad makes your body want to buy the D&G products so that you can have the same physical experience that they are having. It's completely wrong (and discriminatory towards women, but I think you covered that pretty well).
You guys both covered it very well. I wanted to add that if you notice, like Alcep said, "they're all attractive". This add may not only sell the product of D&G and sex but it could also sell gym memberships! The women in the picture is an idel thin and strong body type and the men are also oiled up showing off their 6-packs. It may make people become more self conscious of themselves which could lead to the path of dieting, working out, and eating disorders.
ReplyDeleteI really like this post because I probably won't have seen the sexism and violence that is protrayed in it if you hadn't have pointed it out to me. That is sad because I am a female and therefore should be more sensitive to the sexism issue, but I am getting better at seeing political statements. I find it odd though that this add shows the dominiance of women, but yet it is geared towards women. I guess to me that doesn't make any sense.
