Victoria's Possible Secrets

Setting aside how hot and gorgeous these chicks are, the commercial for Victoria's Secret is very interesting after a closer look and analysis. The director, Micheal Bay (director of Transformers), has added some fun explosions and lighting effects to these girls to give it an appealing attention grabber to the audience. The advertisement's target = get girls to buy these bras. Clearly, the advertisement is trying to persuade the women or the men to buy these sexy lingerie. What the audience does not know or should take a closer look at is the body image of these girls. There are plenty more signs, but body image is the main concern as of now. What this advertisement portrays, as Susan Bordo would probably put it, is the way of how a female's physical appearance should be. These VS models are slim, thin, and probably have unnatural breasts. This advertisement is really showing the media what women ought to really look like. Sexy, slim, big breasts, naughty, and a little kinky. It's like soft core porn. This is something similar to what we have discussed in class, but I wanted to elaborate more on the how it effects the media. Because of these gorgeous models, they force some of American females to value and change their body into a slim sexy girl figure. If we compare the old 70's - 80's fashion, females were not expected to be all that slim and sexy (they were average weight and did not have much skin to show). But today's media and fashion has it at a nudity level. It is because of these advertisements that start a new trend in today's fashion and general body image of female and male. The media is what shapes the individual's practice of his/her body and what he/she must do to change and adapt to it.

  1. I completely agree with your interpretation of the Victoria Secret Models. Being a girl, Victoria Secret commercials always showcase a wide variety of lingerie that is targeted for those aged around 16-30. The commercials and advertisements only use women with impeccable bodies and large breasts which I feel hurts many girls’ self-esteem and self-image. After watching these commercials, many girls think that they are "ugly" and "worthless" if they don’t look like these models. This helps to explain the growing health issues and diseases such as anorexia growing within girls. Today, more and more girls are judged upon their bodies and looks instead of their values. I feel as though our advertising techniques and how it portrays women is hurting the values of women’s bodies. Media standards today are at a much higher level of nudity and self-image then it was back in the olden days and girls are viewed more as objects of sex then as a normal human. You did an excellent job at identifying this within your article. Great Job!
