So.. You're not addicted?

Like many people, I have friends or know people who smoke pot on a daily basis. Why do people do this? I don't understand. I have nothing against it but I personally choose not to smoke. I feel like smoking pot is almost a different culture. Some of my friends would go to a guy's house after school and just sit there and smoke pot. All day. Every day. While high, they would watch TV and munch on a lot of snacks. I asked them one day why they smoked and they proceeded to tell me that getting high was trippy. Everything was just so calm and their bodies felt a different kind of weird, a good weird though. One guy told me that he couldn't really get high anymore because he smoked so much. He could only feel high for a very short period of time. Not knowing anything about marijuana, I asked them all if they were addicted. They laughed in my face. They told me you couldn't get addicted to pot and I almost didn't believe them. They smoked everyday. How could they not be addicted? However, I do believe it is an addiction. Even if it is a social addiction. They all had a good time smoking together. What else would they do if they didn't smoke? Probably nothing. None of them wanted to be left out if something crazy happened while they were high. It was their body practice and completely normal for them. They didn't know anything but their "high" life. So why wouldn't they want to give that up? Because they were addicted and I am sure of it. They tried to stop but they couldn't. Could they not stop because they bonded as friends through getting high? Could they not stop because they liked the feeling? Could they not stop because there was nothing else to do? I couldn't figure it out. I feel like I never will. It's not that I don't agree with Becker, but I believe there is an addiction. Maybe not to the pot, but to some aspect of the smoking.

  1. I agree 100% with you. I think that even though marijuana isn't addictive biologically, it is addictive in the social aspect of it. I have known several kids who smoked pot but no matter what there friends would say to them they wouldn't give up the drug and would get very defensive about it. In my opinion why would someone get very defensive to the point of yelling and screaming about using a substance if they were not addicted to it?
