Cosmopolitan "6 reasons to have sex TONIGHT"
"From this it follows that they are not free to act as they choose in the service of transmitting life, as if it were wholly up to them to decide what is the right course to follow. On the contrary, they are bound to ensure that what they do corresponds to the will of God the Creator. The very nature of marriage and its use makes His will clear, while the constant teaching of the Church spells it out"
This comes from claim #10, in which the Pope defines Responsible Parenthood and the nature of marriage. I take issue with this final paragraph in which the Pope claims that two married partners are not free to act of their own accord in choosing right from wrong. The Pope claims that the couple should be serving God in every action, and in this case it means choosing not to have sex unless life is meant to be created.
I find this VERY troubling, as a distant memory of mine reminds me that God made man with free will, and this is a central teaching in the Catholic religion. As a woman of faith, I feel unhappy to know that my God doesn't trust me to use personal discretion in my actions. In the very first paragraph of the document, the Pope briefly asserts several relevant issues with population density. To manage these, the Pope simply claims that men and women should be competent enough to control their own "natural urges". Aka, choose not to fornicate.
However, one issue I believe that the Pope did not discuss is the multitude of health benefits of a healthy sex life. There is vast research explaining physical, physiological, psychological, and emotional benefits. I just heard a statistic two nights ago that women who orgasm three times per week add three years onto their life! Stress management, physical therapy, and household stability can be results of this habitual participation in this act. Is a person meant to sacrifice their bodily and family health unnecessarily to manage population when there are countless safe and effective methods to all BOTH??
We'll it's obvious that God doesn't trust, we are sinful and bound to that sin; but he loves us despite that and wants what's best for us in terms of serving Him. I think that the Pill is ok, especially in a time we're we don't have as many children as we once did. God created sex to be very intimate and something to be shared with one person and I believe that God knows that sex is made to benefit people wether it's in making babies, having a good time, or getting rid of stress. I think that the Pope is looking too far into all this...
ReplyDeleteAwesome. I did the exact same claim as you did. I mentioned instead that the Pope needs to get up to date with the modern time. You mention that sex is healthy. I think that the Pope is obviously very old school and does not seem to want a live full of fun and unique activities. Sex does have benefits and can also have negative effects as well. Whatever the reason, it seems that the Pope is always against what teenagers do! You don't always have to have sex to make babies, it can be done for 'FUN'.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both of you. Sex is not supposed to just be for conceiving a child. I heard somewhere, "If God hadn't made sex so damn fun, we wouldn't do it as much." Those weren't the exact words - and excuse my language - but you get the jist. It's not just college students that think the Pope is being ridiculous in his claims. God knows we are going to sin and that is why he forgives us for everything we do!
ReplyDeleteSex is a very important part of a relationship. Some couples can go without but many express love through sex. There are other ways to express love though. God did create us with our own free will. So states the Bible. Now the Pope states that we must only have sex to have kids. I think I'll listen to the Bible. Man has translated many parts of the Bible wrongly.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's interesting that the pope used the phrase "natural urges" implying it is completely NATURAL for two people to have sex. What I don't personally understand is why there are rules in place to fight nature, arguably one of the strongest forces of all. I also like that you talked about all the natural health benefits of having regular sex, making our bodies and minds healthier!
