First Awakening

In this scene, Jake is first experiencing his Avatar body. Before he gets into the "capsule" he jokes with Grace that he has only read a manual while Norm has logged 520 hours. Jake thinks everything is cool and is so curious. Once he turns into his Avatar he immediately starts moving and doing things too fast. Instantly, he gets up and starts walking and then eventually running, swishing his tail as he goes. Norm takes everything slowly and calmly. He listens and responds to the doctors with ease. Jake smiles and laughs a little when he realizes he will have full leg motion during his time as an avatar. This is probably why Jake just gets up and starts running. He can't wait to be able to walk again.

When Jake first goes into the "capsule" the music is mysterious and kind of space-y. This could be because he is going to an entirely different place. He is becoming an avatar. A giant, 10 foot, blue avatar. The doctors talking and making Jake and Norm do random tests makes the transformation seem more real and believable. It gives the scene ethos especially because they don't exactly look like humans. The doctors ask normal doctor questions like, "Do you feel any pain?" and "Are you feeling okay?" They tell Jake to "take it slow" because in a sense, he is like a baby. He doesn't exactly know how to operate in his new body. The sound effects are also something to notice. When he swishes his tail, it makes the swishing noise and when he knocks something over the effects make it blatantly obvious. When Jake runs outside, the music builds more intense and then stops. Birds chirping and a basketball bouncing are all the audience can hear - along with other avatar's speaking. When Jake starts running while Norm is chasing after him, the music turns into a jungle song. We can see Jake running on logs eventually running faster and faster. The music turns into an I'm-finally-free tune when he reaches his fastest speed. Jake then stops to run his toes through the dirt and the music changes to extremely happy.

All of this makes me happy for Jake. I'm glad that in a different world and body, he can be free to run and jump and feel the soil through his toes. The music also helps my emotions. When the song reaches the climax, I'm at the highest point emotionally as well. When I'm sad, the music is sad. The sound effects go unnoticed because - I swear - they are much louder than the talking. This could be because certain scenes need more emphasize on certain things going on. Fantasy works because of the real "human" things that are put into the movie. I didn't want to watch this movie because I thought it was going to be stupid. I mean giant blue people, seriously? But when I actually watched it I was fascinated at how everything fit together and how everything worked. Although the avatars were tall and blue they it still seemed believable to me. At the end of the movie, I wanted to become an avatar to experience the beauty of Pandora and hoped for an Avatar 2.

  1. I really liked how you mentioned the ending because I find the ending very emotional and exciting also. I think that the ending is perfect for this movie because it suggests another Avatar movie and it sort of teases the viewer into believing that their is a possibility for more excitement in another movie.
